Copyright & consent
The template states that artists retain copyright and moral rights unless otherwise agreed in writing. MMDA may not alter, reproduce, or distribute a work beyond the agreed methods without written approval.
For Indigenous artists
We welcome expressions of interest from emerging and established First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists as we work toward a Spring/Summer 2027 launch.
A first conversation
Introduce yourself, tell us about your practice, and share a portfolio or social link if you have one. You do not need a finished application to ask a question.
Introduce yourselfAn enquiry does not grant MMDA rights to your artwork or create a consignment agreement.
Painting, drawing, beadwork, carving, sculpture, photography, textiles, and digital art are all reflected in our artist profile materials.
We are interested in the range of traditional and contemporary practices, including work by artists whose voices have had limited market exposure.
Share only the stories and imagery you are comfortable sharing. Cultural or ceremonial material may require specific permissions or may not be appropriate for public presentation.
The proposed artist pathway
Participation will be developed through conversation and written agreement. An expression of interest is the starting point.
Tell us your preferred name, your medium, and what you hope to explore with MMDA. Include a link to your work if available.
The Artist Profile Information Form helps gather your biography, practice, and cultural guidance. It includes a choice to review your profile before publication.
Talk with MMDA about the work, your community connections, and any documentation needed for participation. Ask the team how to provide identity documents securely.
If both parties choose to proceed, record the selected artwork, sale methods, permissions, and compensation in a written agreement before representation begins.
The current consignment framework
The supplied standard agreement is available for review. Final participation and any changes to terms require written agreement with MMDA.
The template states that artists retain copyright and moral rights unless otherwise agreed in writing. MMDA may not alter, reproduce, or distribute a work beyond the agreed methods without written approval.
The template gives MMDA exclusive sales rights for the works listed in the agreement, for its duration. Originals, prints, digital rights, reproductions, and exhibition are selected for each piece in Schedule A.
The template assigns insurance, shipping, digitization, display, packaging, and hosting costs to MMDA. It provides for artist payment within 30 days of a completed transaction, after commission.
The template allows either party to end the agreement by written notice. It provides for the return of unsold physical works at MMDA’s expense and for digital rights and reproductions to cease, except where separately licensed.
The current template uses a marginal scale based on the pre-tax realized sale price. Special project terms may be changed by mutual written agreement.
| Sale-price tier | MMDA commission |
|---|---|
| $1–$1,000 | 50% |
| $1,001–$2,500 | 40% |
| $2,501 and above | 30% |
